A Cross-Country Workout

In more ways than one…

I’m determined to get a run in every day during our little visit to Minnesota. Sunday afternoon we decided to get rustic and take it to an old childhood friend, Kruger Park.

Kevin grew up just down the road in Winona so I was shocked that he’d never been here!

I have two favorite memories of this park. First, our dad used to give us super fun sled rides – with our sleds tied to the back of the car! :) Second, there’s a really big hill – really good for riding your hot cycles down!

For today, we stuck to running.

The path starts out as pavement, but quickly turned to dirt. Dirt completely covered with leaves which actually made the going a little tough since we had o idea what was UNDERNEATH the leaves (SHARP ROCKS!!).

This hill was CRAZY to run fast hike up! But at the end, we go to see this:

A little lookout point!

Look at that fierce sense of accomplishment! Kevin made so much fun of me when he saw my proud little pose.

We actually held hands and walked down that huge hill because we are so romantic. And I wasn’t in the mood to fall on my face! I’m convinced that some of those leaves cover Swiss Family Robinson style traps!

What’s scarier than coyotes? Shotgun shells on the path you are running! Haha. I hope that’s what they’re called. I don’t think my brothers read this, and they’re really the only people who would make fun of me about that. I know the high school xc kids run out there so it can’t be too dangerous! But I didn’t like seeing it anyways!

A sign like this can only mean good things when you’re out for a vigorous workout!

We ended up turning around on the path because we didn’t want to get lost! So I decided to top off our afternoon with a little stair workout.

We finished about 4.25 miles of trail and two sets of stairs in just under an hour.

Sweet couple. I am so thrilled that Kevin didn’t have homework this weekend so even with the stinking road trip, we got to spend lots of QT together!

Oh. Are you curious about my little outfit? I kept wanting to call it a costume. Haha. That’s so vintage!

Here’s my dad in 1978 wearing a similar outfit!

If only wearing the uniform would help me get closer to some of those times! Impressive, right? Notice that my mother didn’t feel the need to share any pictures of herself! She ran college track/xc with my dad so it’s definitely in my blood.

I have to go make some pancakes for my little sisters now. They got up ridiculously early just because I’m home. I have about 7 more posts in my brain, but they are going to be slow in coming because I’m in Wi-Fi-less town! It’s rough. But I’m almost excited about the back log of awesome blog posts I’m going to get to read later when it’s catch-up time.

What was the best part of your weekend? Seeing the family of course. And trust me, I’ve been taking pictures.

What is the best way to decorate pumpkins? The girlies and I are seriously considering doing some glittering while Kevin is stuck @ the office.

  2. What an awesome workout!!! I love fall, unfortunately where I live we don’t really have seasons so no fall colors for me. The workout outfit is totally cute and I kept saying “where did she get that, I need one” the entire time I read this post.

    • Lol. You like the retro look? I was so excited when I found out my mom still had her uniform! So fun!

  3. LOVED this post! I wish I had woods like that to exercise in!! And that is awesome that you still have that picture of your Dad’s. I have old track pictures of my dad as well – SO great.

  4. Holy Smokes! Your dad was FAST! That is amazing! I love that both of your parents were runners! That is so fun!

I am glad that you and Kevin have lots of QT! YAY!

  5. Uhh, sleds being pulled by a car?! Sounds totally fun!!

I went to a nearby trail today and I too was concerned about what was lurking beneath the leaves–scary stuff!

  6. What a wonderful place to exercise and run at! I love trail runs, they make the time fly by too

  8. I love how the signs were grown INTO the tree!

  9. Damn he was fast! You must have speed in your blood.

I’ll have to check out that park too. Looks pretty great.

    • You would love it. It’s perfect for running right now. There’s a sign for the turn right after Kellogg on the Wabasha. There are miles and miles of trails!

  10. What’s REALLY awesome is your dad’s HAIR. Love it!
Best part of my weekend was my first meeting with my new boss, seeing my new office, and being picked up by my dad for a post-meeting lunch. :)

    • I know, right? I did inherit the curly, but not the afro. Sounds like a great weekend! Dads are the best!

  11. What a beautiful place to exercise at! Thank you for sharing the pictures. Looks different to the Kruger park I know in South Africa :)
