My First Time Cooking Indian: Channa Masala

I’ve been waiting FOREVER to try out this recipe for Channa Masala from Eat.Live.Run. I was far too lazy to actually go to a grocery store not within a 1-block radius so I ordered the spices I needed online.

Seriously, the smell in your kitchen will be amazing when you cook this! And probably overpowering the next morning when you stagger out of bed!

Channa Masala (via Eat.Live.Run.)

2 15 ounce cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed
2 garlic cloves, smashed and chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
1 inch knob ginger, peeled and chopped
1 15 ounce can diced tomatoes
3 tbsp tomato paste
1/2 lemon
1 tbsp coriander
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp garam masala
1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp tumeric
2 tbsp butter
In a large cast iron skillet, heat the butter. Once melted, add the onions and cook for about 15 minutes on medium low heat, or until golden brown.
Once the onions have caramelized, add the garlic, ginger and jalapeno and stir well. Cook for about two minutes or until it starts to smell like heaven on earth.
Add the tomato paste and pince, using above photos as an example. This is very important and if you don’t do it right your dish is pretty much doomed. No pressure.
Add the coriander, cumin, cayenne and tumeric and stir well. Then add the diced tomatoes, chickpeas and garam masala.
Cook for about five minutes or until the chickpeas have heated through. Finish with a squeeze of lemon and top with plain yogurt and cilantro if desired!

The result was even BETTER than I hoped for since I’m not actually a fan of chick peas that are not in hummus form. Next time, I’m going to make it spicer and try my hand as some Naan.

After seeing a bunch of cute pictures of Julie’s Vizsla on PBfingers, I was complaining to Kevin that I wanted a  NORMAL dog who could snuggle like that!!!

I have NO idea how Kevin and Boyd conspired against me to create this scene. I guess Boyd was worn out from all his antics at Garden of the Gods because he acted so cool. My dirty little traitors. I guess I have to keep waiting for my Vizsla!

I couldn’t resist a few Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos last night!! Kevin felt the need to buy a bag for New Year’s Eve, claiming it was the last chance for him to eat junk food before the New Year. I keep reminding him of this when I see him eating cookies and M&Ms. Aren’t you glad you don’t live with me?

Have you ever tried cooking Indian? Favorite Indian dish? Be brave!!! Give it a try. I wish I would’ve tried sooner. This is the first time I’ve ever actually lived in a place where you could actually go to an Indian restaurant!! It’s pretty sweet.

Do you have a pet? I can’t believe what a dog lover I’ve become this year. I HATED dogs last year. Mainly because all I ever saw was mangy street dogs who would chase me while I was running in the DR. They were scary!! Now I always say “hi” to dogs when I see them. Like this,”Heyyyy puppy!!!” Maybe babies will grow on me like that… I do like playing with the non-fragile types. The fatter the better!!! Especially they’re not particularly drool-y.

  5. The only Indian food that I’ve ever eaten has come frozen ie Amy’s. Your dinner looks delish however!

I have a cat whose great because he doesn’t need constant attention. Though I’d love to have a dog one day. My parents have a Haviennese and he’s adorable!!

  7. Mmm I loooove Indian food…like all of it hahaha. I have a dog and am not a dog-lover, just a lover of my dog. I like other dogs that are well-behaved and don’t drool too much (my philosophy on liking kids as well). Maybe someday I’ll like all dogs.

  8. I have never had Indian food but you’re opening my eyes, sounds delicious!!!
I love animals, all animails! Wait, they must have hair/legs (snakes, insects, and creepy crawly things are NOT COOL!) THe husband and I have two wonderful cats and one puppy that adopted us.

  9. Those chickpeas looks delicious. Indian cuisine can get really creative with them! You can cook them in a spinach gravy, or a cool variation I saw was with tea bags. When I just started trying out indian cuisine, I followed munjala’s kitchen and show me the curry because they have detailed instruction videos.

  10. I just recently learned that I liked Indian food, and the dish you made looks amazing! Thanks for sharing

  11. I am a HUGE dog person. And I am def not a baby person haha (I am weird I know… i get a lot of crap for it too, im too scared to hold them)
I have never tried cooking indian, i havent had much of it because anything I have seen or heard of people eating it has been spicy and im a huge wuss when it comes to spicy!

    • Oh. You should definitely try Indian. Don’t be afraid, you can always cook (or ORDER!!) on the mild side, but it will definitely be flavorful. Babies are scary. It’s not our fault. Plus. They cry. Tons.

      • and dont forget poop a lot too! haha
Okay i will try it sometime on the MILD side (indian food),and report back! I was scared of thai food forever until i found some dishes i liked, so I know i must expand my horizons

  12. #1 I LOVE your hair in the picture. If I ever have long hair again, I’m gonna attempt that. I doubt it though.
#2 I haaate dogs. Maybe it’s because I live in The Bahamas, and there are lots of strays?
