Bears on Unicycles + I Love This Box

Motivational thought of the Day:

“Back home in Russia we train bears to ride unicycles. You can train to do anything.” – Oleg Kechko (1996 Olympic Games, Olympic Lifter, Coach)

Old Oleg didn’t have a client like Kevin who drags his feet to the gym every M/W/F when he knows we have a little WOD. It’s been hard to plan them lately because a group of guys has annoyingly started playing basketball during our gym time. Our gym is pretty cramped so it’s hard to find another space to do things like burpees. I wanted to wall balls today, but I had to cut them.

Things I didn’t have to cut:

Today’s WOD:

4 rounds for time:

  • Box Jump Burpees (30-20-10-5x)
  • Kettlebell Alternting Clean and Press

Check out this demo of box jump burpees!! The guy does a very impressive 50. Kevin: “I hope I’m never that good.” But we actually did a total of 65 today! Granted, not as fast.

Our times:

  • Round 1 (30) 7:13
  • Round 2 (20) 5:09
  • Round 3 (10) 2:17
  • Round 4 (5) 1:30
  • Total Time – 16:09

It’s worth sharing that attractive face so you can see my sneak pic of Kevin finishing his workout. Look at him powering through!!

I own this box. And that is some quality neck sweat!! Afterwards I played around and made 6 consecutive jumps on the higher box. It really takes me a minute to work up the courage!! That will hurt if you miss. But I usually just do this super geeky chicken out!!

I’m getting so brave!! I’m going to be honest. I’m such a girl. So it takes me a little nerve to just jump up and grab the handles. This was my first time trying Knees to Elbows (literally).  Oh boy. That’s not going to happen for a while. I had hard time just hanging there. Although I probably should’ve tried it before the 5k and the 65 rep workout for optimal results!

I know Kevin secretly loves working out because he wanted to try too!! Hehe. Predictably, he did way better than me without even trying. I have a dream to do pull-ups someday. I think I need a bar at home! Don’t worry. I’m keeping an eye on my bicep size!I hate bulking up.

I’m so awesome that I found a place to do box jumps outside. Which is a good thing because we turned in our 30-day notice for our gym today. I LOVE going to the gym, but our gym is way too expensive. And we use far too little of it to make it worth it. So I’m going to take the next 30 days for all they’re worth!! :)

Kevin perked up right away when he heard what was on the menu for dinner. I made the recipe for lasagna magherit that I made when his parents were in town back in January.  I improvised a downsized version since we didn’t have a whole box of noodles on hand.

As I write this, Kevin is trying to give me positive reinforcement so I cook more things like lasagna and chicken parm. And less things with sweet potatoes and lentils. Haha. That trick doesn’t work on me! I invented that trick!!! I think he notices I’m using it when I compliment his muscles too. Haha.

So one of my big fails on the Jackie Warner plan is that I really don’t drink enough water. I don’t consider it… till I hit the gym parched. I hate drinking plain water when I’m sitting at my desk at work. I’m just telling it like it is… so I was curious if any of you drink it? Basically what you think of its nutritional content since I’m not a super awesome label reader like some of you. Although you do have me looking for products with no GMO’s! Kevin just loves that little adventure in the frozen foods section. I know it’s always MOST natural to drink regular water, but you know.

Vitamin Water Zero? I really like that acai-blueberry flavor in the pic. It’s on sale for 50 cents right now! That’s cheaper than a Diet Coke! :)

If you can train to do anything, what would you like to train to do? Well, a ton of things. But I can’t stop thinking about mastering double unders. I also want to brave up to kick up to handstand against a wall. Why am I afraid of doing that? I can do it without a wall — for a second. So I shouldn’t be afraid. Haha. See also: marathon, push-ups, pull-ups, and many more.

What things do you like to positively reinforce others about? Definitely exercise and healthy eating. I like to cheer on people I see running in the park on the way to work. Although I’m jealous and yell,”Don’t you have a job?!!” Also, dressing nicely and reading books.

  1. It’s SO HARD for me to drink enough water. In high school and parts of college, I would probably drink barely 2 cups a day if I wasn’t playing tennis. I’m not even joking. To try to drink more now, I stick my tumbler under my chin so that the straw is right there, and I can force myself to sip as I type.

  2. I’m to scared to do any box jumping exercises! Knowing me, I’d totally eat it and hurt my shins!

I’m not sure if you and Kevin are going to completely quit the gym… But if you’re looking for cheaper alternatives… Maybe look into getting the Costco deal (2 years for 24hour Fitness… I think it’s around $200).

Also, are you doing any foot races in CO this year? I just signed up for the Cherry Creek Sneak! ECK!

    That quote is golden:)

The Lemonade flavor is my favorite. You’ll gasp when you hear the price of our gym membership here in this one stoplight town. Ready? $45 per moth for me AND my husband. 24/7 access. No sign up fee, no contract. See, there are perks to small towns!

  5. Your sneak-attack picture is funny!
There are some free workout videos on Hulu – you could use those to switch things up a bit.

Awesome workout! Good job!! I love the gym, BUT I love working out outside. You can still get a great sweat in. Hopefully, the weather will be good for you guys!
My husband loves my chicken parm and yes he would prefer me to make that every day over the “healthier” options! Argh!

  7. I love the vitamin water zeros too just to switch it up from water sometimes!
    that dinner looks fabulous!

I think that there are far too many questionable ingredients in vitamin water. I would add lemons or limes to your water. Or buy some emergen-c or another type of all natural electrolyte/vitamin water pack that you can add to your water (check out vitamin cottage for Ultima or trace minerals). It;s about 10 bucks for a pack of 40, way tastier and packed with vitamins and electrolytes.

I don’t like drinking plain water either, but I find if it is ICE cold and/or in a stainless steel water bottle it tastes sooooo much better. Plus a couple of lemon slices in it does wonders for my water consumption.

  10. Lauren says:

    Ooh the lasagna looks good!
Are you guys joining another gym or are you going to work out at home (and outside)?

  11. Get your moneys worth for those next 30 days— I’m with Kevin, I would be stoked if that were on the menu for supper tonight! Mmmmm!
