Used Furniture: Yay or Nay?

Today so did not feel like a Wednesday! Kevin James took a day off from work so we were on holiday!! One of his busy seasons is coming up August-October so he won’t be able to take any days off. Boo!! So we jumped at the opportunity to have a day together today.

We decided to spend part of the day checking out furniture. That’s how the title topic came up. How do you feel about  used furniture? I’m totally cool with it, especially since I have kind of weird/unique tastes. However, I do get the ick factor, and Kevin’s main dislike is with used couches. On the other hand, I don’t like spending $2000 on a some cookie cutter couch, similar to my taste in houses. We almost had a great vintage one our realtor found for us. It was the perfect size/shape, but the pattern was just awful. I don’t really want to go through reupholstering or whatever.

So we checked out Crate & Barrel.

Loved this orange chair. I love big 2-person chairs. They’re great for reading. By yourself. Haha. Or maybe with a dog or two. Although that dog is SURE to bump your coffee.

Okay. Ignore the pillows. We loved this settee at West Elm. Not a couch. Not a loveseat. A settee!!! It’s actually a good size for our weird little living room. We don’t actually really use that room unless we have people over. One of the many empty rooms is sort of set up as a family room so we hang out in there.

Probably my favorite place that we went to was Decade.

They had a wide variety of furniture, clothes, trinkets, and treasures, and they were by far the most reasonably price of any secondhand/vintage-y type shop I’ve been to in Denver.

Kevin, testing out some patio furniture and laughing because he realizes he’s being photographed with a purse. Hehe.

So when you have a day off during the middle of the week, you have to hit up a restaurant you can’t normally make it to — that’s a rule!! Kevin wanted to try an Indian buffet so we went to Little India.

I get a little nervous about buffets because I’m a picky eater. I tried to be brave. The food was good. I liked it. But, I really prefer not to eat dark meat chicken and there was quite a bit of it. I tried that little fried vegetable thing. It was pretty good too. And you obviously can go wrong with the Naan. So overall it was good, and they definitely had excellent service. You refill the Diet Cokes, you win our hearts!! Those drinks cost almost as much as the buffet!!!

So we bought the patio furniture home!! Two chairs & two ottomans. It was really a steal. And they’re so comfy. Perfect for our front porch. Now I just need some lights!

I wish you guys could see the fraidy cat walk Boyd does when he’s around new things. He slinks around like he stole something until he gets comfortable. It took him a while to adjust to the new house, but I think it’s safe to say he thinks he owns the place now!

Whew! What a whirlwind of a shopping day. We’re still doing some research on the living room seating issues but we’re working on it. My firm rule is to never organize a room around a tv so we never plan to have one out there.

This evening we made it to a midweek worship service at the church we’ve been visiting. I was so happy when we sang my favorite hymn: Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing(We even chose it to be part of our wedding music!) They’re going to catch me taking pictures in church any day now. Lol. When someone adds me on Facebook, that’ll be the day they find out I have a blog. The beginning of the end. Haha.

Last night…

Oh boy. Remember what I said about not planning a room around the tv? Well, that doesn’t mean we don’t want to see the Olympics!! I had already been to the gym earlier in the day so I tried to take it as easy as possible. I read magazines during commercials (although I was really mortified to be seen slacking like that in my gym!).

I was on that Arc trainer for well over 2 hours. We ate dinner early so we could catch the evening NBC coverage, and I was really into the gymnastics!!! I wanted to stay until the end, but it was pushing 10PM, and our feet were getting numb!!!

That called for a second dinner of blue chips + salsa/Laughing Cow cheese. Just wait till the running coverage starts! Haha.

Would you buy/do you have any used furniture? Well, we now have used patio furniture. I’m guessing we’ll acquire some more at some point, but we may have to compromise with a fake old couch to keep Kevin happy.

How would you describe your style? Right now? Spartan. We’ll see what happens. As a teenager I had a Disney Princess bedspread and zebra pants if that helps your imagination.

What’s the best place to buy furniture? I always think the internet is the best place to buy everything.

What’s your FAVORITE piece of furniture in your house? Dining room table & chairs are about the only presentable things we own at this point. :)

  1. Hmm I have mixed feelings about used furniture. On one hand it kind of creeps me out (I would NEVER buy a used mattress for example but I don’t think many would). On the other hand, vintage/antique furniture can be truly amazing! I guess it would ultimately come down to the one item in question.

  2. I think anything without fabric is a-okay to buy used. But the idea of sitting on a used couch, not knowing what could have spilled on that thing over the years with it’s previous owners, just gives me the heebie jeebies. Chairs, tables, dressers, etc. though? I think some of the best stuff is the older used stuff. The quality of furniture nowadays just isn’t the same unless you spend mucho dinero.

Good to know about Decade! I’m okay with most used furniture – except couches/chairs & mattresses :)

Alex and I went to Little India once and…. we weren’t fans. You must have gone for lunch because they told us they didn’t have a dinner buffet. It was pricy and really, we liked the quality of our less-expensive-dinner-buffet India Oven better.

    Love that settee!

  4. Love the orange couch! I wish I had a Crate & Barrel near me.

  5. used furniture is fine as long as it’s not fabric. like beds and couches. tables and chairs are much better since it’s easier to clean.

Make sure you both like the couch. That floral couch you grew up with that your dad bought before we were married, (I was along but not thinking I would live with it for 30 yrs) I never really like. Than your brother had it the last few years, he just took it to the dump. Of course if you don’t like something they last forever……………….

  7. I’m okay doing used with anything that doesn’t have fabric on it! Like a coffee table or tv stand is fine, but I’m not too down with used couches.

  8. I do get a little weirded out about used furniture, especially couches, but I think it depends what condition it looks like. I would probably use the extra savings to get it professionally cleaned. My favorite piece is our orange couch! I love it!

  9. I am all about used furniture, i think it has more character personally. As long as it is in some sort of usable condition. And my favorite… cheese and salsa melted together. Holy yum.

  10. I have a love of furniture shopping! I am obsessed with stores like crate and barrel and west elm! Totally normal lol! I love that orange chair BTW!

  11. We just got a new dining room table–and I’m in love with it. It’s a counter height table, and I was a bit unsure about that style at first, but now I can’t imagine going back to a traditional table. Surprisingly, we found this table (and the last one I owned–which I had for over 10 years and is still in great shape–now my little sister has it) at Costco! I also have my patio set from there. Good stuff. :)

  12. i’m okay with used furniture- but like you said, a bit iffy on couches and chairs with fabric. that can be kind of gross. and also i would never collect any of the nasty furniture i see on the sidewalks….maybe.

I can’t wait for track & field coverage! We don’t have a TV, but might get one just for the Olympics… :) We finally broke down and bought a couch and loveseat at a furniture store. They’re a little cookie-cutter like, but we got a good deal at a store called Sofa Select, and they are more comfortable than any couch I’ve ever owned!

Oh comfortable is definitely very important to Kevin. I prefer to hide the comfortable furniture and put cute stuff out in the main rooms. Lol. But right now we just have a futon so I can’t really say this method is working!!!
