The Rotten Egg + Buying Local?


Last one out of bed is a rotten egg!!!

That would be the Boykin. He’s been  little pampered this weekend because he’s been so sick. I was actually worried about him. I think we’re finally in the clear now. Two socks have resurfaced throughout the weekend… hopefully there are no more. He is never smart or sneaky except when it comes to eating socks! I have no idea where he found them!!

Yesterday afternoon we had to quarantine him behind bikes and benches. Poor thing!!!

Okay. So I generally don’t partake in any church refreshments. Donuts, bagels, and juice — they just don’t tempt me. Coconut Almond Fudge from Little Man? Yes, please! They had some leftover from the race yesterday, and I was more than happy to help them clean it up. Of course, I only ate it during announcements. ;) I loved that flavor though! I didn’t see it yesterday because it was at the bottom of the freezer!

The church met up at a nearby park for a picnic after church today. I brought the broccoli slaw. That’s the ONLY way I would be trusting a salad at a pot luck! Haha. That’s Greek yogurt in there.. no mayo. Also light balsamic, dried cherries & craisins (whatever I had in the bottoms of bags), almonds, salt, & pepper. I was afraid no one would eat, but it was all eaten!! Hooray!! I loved that popcorn too. It was called like Smart Popcorn or something? It kind of reminded me of Pirate’s Booty.

Somebody else I know had an even better time.

Kevin James was scarfing the Scotcheroos and the watermelon. I don’t like watermelon at all so it’s never in the house. And if I bake, I would generally choose something a little more imaginative than Scotcheroos. So my husband enjoys pot lucks! Haha.

Sunday has somehow become our grocery shopping day so we hit up two stores today.

First:

In Season Local Market. A cute little shop that sells local/organic type stuff. We loaded up on some vegetables. So exciting. The avocado I got there was amazing. If they keep having one, I swear I’m going to stop by every day on the way home from the gym and buy one!!

King Soopers > Safeway. I despise the Safeway in our neighborhood. I’m not sure if they are all like that, but I just have not been a fan. For some reason, we haven’t been able to bring ourselves to drive the additional mile to the closest King Soopers. Until today. Welcome back to my life Melt! They don’t have quite the health/organic foods section that they did in Greenwood Village, but I was still much happier there.

The avocado made my salad so happy!!!! Romaine + onion + refried black beans + a sprinkle of cheese + avocado + cilantro! My favorite kind of salad ever!! I think mine was better than Qdoba or Chipotle tonight!!

Today’s WOD: Full Body Pyramid Workout  (via Pumps and Iron)

10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 Reps of the following (for time):

  • Jump lunge mountain climbers: Start in a lunge position and jump up, landing with opposite leg in front, back in a lunge position. Place hands flat on ground and do a mountain climber set (one on each side) so that the same foot ends up in front. Stand back up into lunge position and repeat. To make sure you aren’t working one leg more than the other, alternate the front foot on your uneven rounds of 9 reps, 7 reps, etc.
  • Side plank twists with weight (complete on both sides): Start in a side plank position holding a weight in your outstretched arm parallel to the ground. Twist your body in as if your torso were turning into a regular plank position, and as you do so, bring the weight in across your rib cage, crunching as if hugging yourself. I used an 8lb hand weight.
  • Medicine ball burpees: This is a regular burpee, only holding on to a medicine ball the whole time. Squat down, placing medicine ball on the ground in front of you, carefully jump back into a plank position, jump back up to squatting, then stand up and jump with your arms (and medicine ball) in the air. I used an 8lb med ball.
  • Kettlebell swings x2: Start with kettlebell down between your legs and, using your arms as a pendulum, swing the bell to slightly above eye level by thrusting with your hips while keeping your core tight as you stand up straight. Swing back down and repeat. Multiply the round by 2 for your rep count (during the first round, you’ll do 10×2= 20 reps). I used a 25lb kettlebell.

Do you grocery shop all in one place or in a variety of places? Do you go to any local shops? I need to get signed up with that CSA produce box thing, but I think I might be too late for this year! I would say we should garden, but I just don’t see that working out for us. Perhaps make a friend with a garden?

What was the best thing you ate this weekend? Probably all the ice cream and fro yo at the race. But I also made a pretty sweet zucchini lasagna which was not pictured due to starvation and bad lighting. :)

What do you like to take to a pot luck? Either something healthy that I will eat… or something I’ve been wanting to bake so I can pawn it off on others!

    safeway is no bueno anywhere, in my opinion! i used to try to go when i first moved here but i can’t do it. and by me, safeway is more expensive. KS all the way (but I call it kroger – you can take the girl out of cincinnati but you can’t take the cincinnati out of the girl!)

    I want to do a CSA too. A little worried about what I will do with the “weird” veggies though. Almost entirely a devoted Hy-Vee shopper, with the exception of Bluff Country Co-op (but I only go there for the bulk items and a few organics). Oh and Mon Petite Cupcakes that they sell there. Amazing cupcakes!

      I love when they have cupcakes in places like that!! There’s a CSA in our hood where you can choose what you want! So spoiled. Or you can have the prepackaged delivered by bicycle. Why did I not research this earlier in the season!?

  3. Ohh best thing I ate this weekend? That’s tricky but I’m going to have to go with a miso black cod…it had such a buttery, melt in your mouth texture…YUM! And after that, it would have to be truffle & parmesan fries…yep it was one heck of a tasty weekend!

    That’s funny because the Safeway in my town is the best market. We HATE Savemart. Gross. I’m glad Boyd is better, he is sort of the best dog ever… especially because of the long hairs on top of his head.

    AH, love me a nice picnic with church family! And oh man, I usually go to like, 2-3 stores to buy stuff to save money. Of course, I try to have them as CLOSE to each other as possible or else the benefit would cancel itself out b/c of car gas :P I’m always at WF for organic produce, then trader joes or Albertsons.

    That’s one terrible thing about living in a small town…the grocery shopping options are so limited:P The only place to buy local is our farmer’s market and it’s so small that it’s hard to find what I need. But, I can’t complain too much b/c both my parents and grandparents have gardens…knowing someone with a garden is the best!

  11. Okay–so do you mind giving the specifics on the broccoli slaw dish? How much of what did you use? It sounds like something I’d like (yay for no mayo!). :)

  12. considering i don’t have a car, my grocery explorations are limited! i’ll occasionally take the metro and visit a whole foods or trader joe’s though. broccoli slaw sounds good! best thing i ate was brunch on sunday. i love a big old breakfast.

  13. I do all of my grocery shopping in the same place for the most part. However, I do like to go to a little local market for some items, but I only do that every once in a while.

    The best thing I ate this weekend was a big salad of veggies, salsa, avocado, and an overeasy egg. It was so phenomenal!!

  14. Once we took a bowl of boiled eggs to a potluck (mainly because we forgot about it until the last minute and that was the only thing I could think of that was fast). My kids didn’t see what we brought, but when the pot luck started they ran over and were so excited to tell me that someone brought boiled eggs (they love them)! And they were gone quickly. P.S. I left the in the eggs in the shell because it seemed more sanitary.
