Totally bummed that August is over… it’s still a summer month in my mind no matter how much stinking Halloween candy has been in stores.
But totally excited for my birthday month!!! Who else is a September baby?
I actually spent today hanging out with a September 1st baby & her cousin.
The daughter of a friend and her cousin came over to bake with me!! She’s having a party another day, but she was dying to do some baking and her mom knew just where to send her!
One of the girls REALLY likes lemon so she wanted to make these Lemon Surprise Cakes (similar to this one). Spoiler: the rather unexciting surprise is that the inside has a custard texture. The good news is that they look super cute when baked in teacups, and they taste like lemon bars! And I learned that my Fiestaware can be baked up to 350. Fun!
The girls were being a little ridiculous with their germs, so in the end, Pippa got to sample one!
Lucky girl!
No birthday would be complete without cupcakes so we also made chocolate cupcakes with coffee frosting. The frosting was AMAZING!!! We loosely followed a Taste of Home recipe, but I was definitely teaching the girls how to improvise.
I also had to teach them that I am made of muscle and can pick them both up at the same time.
Do you think I could have piled Pippa on top? She looks like she’s thinking about it.
I only ended up on the floor once… I think they’ve gotten too old and forgotten how to hop on for a piggyback ride.
The baking afternoon took a solid almost 5 hours… sweet Kevin James was PAINTING that whole time. So excited for the new colors!! We ended up not having dinner until 9PM, but it was amazing!
This is going to be one of those meals my 12-year-old sister calls me on the phone to tell me how disgusting it looks (she wasn’t a big fan of the cauliflower rice). I know spaghetti squash is super popular on the internet, but it was my first time trying it. I actually microwaved it and added diced tomatoes + TONS of crushed red pepper and garlic. When I say tons, I mean tons. I didn’t want to taste anything squash-y. We topped it with chicken, basil, and green peppers. Plus more garlic and crushed red pepper. Looks totally weird. Tastes totally delicious.
And one of Boyd to even the score:
He was really grumpy and ready for bed when I took that pic, but I just love that absurd little tuft of hair.
What’s the ugliest thing you like to eat? Refried beans are definitely up there too. And kale isn’t exactly cute.
Is your birthday this month? I’ve been forgetting too many lately… it’ll be a good reminder for me.
What were your hobbies in middle school? Reading. Although at that age, I think Deidre was dragging me out of the house occasionally. And piano, of course.

Your posts always crack me up!
Oh my goodness, CUTE apron! I love it!
Haha I just celebrated my birthday. Yay September babies
I love all of your aprons.
My birthday is the 8th!!! I am way older than you though. I’m turning 37! Eek! And about the unattractiveness of delicious food–it’s the taste that counts! (now, bad-smelling food is different!). I love spaghetti squash but my fiancé won’t touch it.
Some of the soup purees that I make are really ugly! That and oatmeal when I mix in a bunch of things. My b-f calls it my “bowl of gruel”.
Happy birthday month!! It’s my sister’s too …what day is yours on? Oats are anything pretty yet they are my favorite thing to eat! Especially when I want to blog about oats, the pictures do no justice…at alll!!
I would want to have baking parties. darn. wish I lived closer!
Love the aprons!
looks tasty! yeah, anthony and i are going to attempt squash “pasta” soon i think. it’s weird, but delicious right?
Baking all afternoon sounds like the perfect way to spend a Saturday!
It’s my birthday month too! Yay for September babies! Those chocolate coffee cupcakes sound amazing!! My green smoothies and green pancakes are probably top of the list for ugliest foods!
September 7th! One of the ugliest things I like to eat is what I like to call a veggie bowl…I smash cauliflower and potatoes and all kinds of different veggies together and it tastes delicious, but looks ridiculous!
whoa that lemon surprise cakes sounds delicious, the custard center is what got what. What a cute little mohawk, hot stud there.
ahh i love it! looks like the pups had a good time too, minus the hair incident. LOL. Happy bday month!
awwwe! looks like you made those girls’ day! so sweet of you.
when you asked about the ugliest thing I like to eat I knew right away: refried beans. I don’t know that they’ll ever appear on the blog….I just don’t know how to make them look as good as they taste.
yep, spinach smoothie ….my kids always make fun of me drinking them and I tell them they taste great but look awful!
Looks like you had a great time with the girls ….
The ugliest thing I like to eat is definitely green monster smoothies. They are brown, but so so good!!
I am not a September baby, but most of my family is…no joke!
You look like you had such a fun day baking.
