Breckenridge Bites: What We Ate!

You’re going to roll your eyes when you see the first two places we ate in Breckenridge… Because we stayed in a cabin, we cooked at least half the time — I loved having that option, because a) I’m frugal, and b) I’m a super picky eater. We weren’t in the mood to eat out on Friday night, so Saturday morning was our first serious trip into downtown Breckenridge.

And we went with our usual:

Isn’t that the CUTEST Starbucks? It was adorable.

After I had my coffee, we spent some time browsing the little tourist shops. We definitely spent the most time in the used book store. I definitely lose track of time the minute I step into a book store or library. Of course, I came back with a stack. Left Denver with 9 books, came back with 13. :) Including Leif Enger’s Peace Like A River which I’m afraid to read so I’ll make Kevin preview. Has anyone read it?

I had to check out the local Subway too — haha. I have this thing for POSH Subways. We always talk about the one we used to go to in Greenwood Village. They had BASKETS there for your sandwiches and chips. The one in Breckenridge was pretty good too, but not quite to that level. Kevin and I always split a buffalo chicken sub with avocado. Subway has won my heart for life by adding avocado!! And by advertising with Olympians… that gets me too.

Saturday night we decided we should actually go somewhere to dinner. I needed out of fleeces and Reeboks! We spent a long time looking at restaurants online. Because that’s what we do. And we didn’t come up with anywhere we were really excited about. There are a few nice restaurants in the Victorian restaurants downtown, but they didn’t really catch my eye. I tend not to like meals that cost more than about $20. Haha. I don’t like seafood or any weird meats so that really narrows it down when it comes to nice restaurants. We decided to go with Mexican — and it was a good choice!!!

Mi Casa Restaurant & Cantina.

What won me over? There’s nothing I love like table side guacamole!

We were also served chips with three types of salsa. We are chip eaters, and didn’t even come close to eating half the basket.

My CRAZY husband ordered a margarita. He ordered the special which was a “natural” margarita sweetened with agave. He told me in the car he was thinking about having one or I would have been shocked when he ordered. We’re not big drinkers. Lol. I had a lick of the salt.

I didn’t even take a picture of my meal. I basically ordered what I thought would be the smallest — so I could focus on the guacamole. I ordered the Fajita Chicken Salad without cheese our sour cream. It was pretty plain, but it was okay. Kevin had a chimichanga which he enjoyed, but it wasn’t his favorite meal ever.

This was our favorite though:

If there’s one thing we order less than alcohol at restaurants, it’s dessert! I definitely have an auto-response set for when servers ask me if I want dessert -no thanks! But neither of us could remember the last time we’d had fried ice cream, and we both love it! The time seemed right! And it did not disappoint!

Sunday lunch was at Cuppa Joe!

I read a Yelp review about the Autumn Turkey Sandwich, and it sounded like the sandwich for me!! Turkey, bacon, spinach, cranberry, and a sweet potato spread. On toast. So wonderful. I loved every bite. I had a delicious black coffee on the side. You probably shouldn’t go to Starbucks or Subway with this available in town. I’m new. :)

Kevin LOVES crepes so I suggested he try one from Crepes A La Cart. I thought all the reviewers were exaggerating about the wait. Wrong. Hahaha. We went on a totally non-peak season day at about 3PM and waited a full hour for 1 crepe. There weren’t even many people in line in front of us. It just. didn’t. move. Lol. I found it hilarious how slow it was. I didn’t even want a crepe… maybe if I did, I would be a better judge of whether or not it was worth the wait.

Kevin chose strawberries & Nutella. He says it was delicious. And that he owes me one for waiting so long. I know he was waiting for my impatient side to burst out, but I remained uncharacteristically calm. Vacation mode!!!!

This morning we made one last stop on the way out of town for Kevin to get donuts from Daylight Donuts. I’m not really a donut fan so that’s another one I’m not really qualified to comment on. If I had to choose, I’d definitely go for sprinkles, but Kevin chose chocolate & glazed. Borrring. Can you tell who has the sweet tooth?

I snacked on this Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn. I loved it!!!! Serving size = 2 cups, my friends. I managed to polish off the whole bag before vacation was over.

We’re back in Denver — with a totally empty refrigerator and ready to start our 4-day week!! :)

Where’s your favorite Starbucks? I do love that one in Breckenridge. I also love ones in Target. That’s just convenient. Haha.

Have you eaten anywhere wonderful in Breckenridge? I’m in love with the place so I’m sure we’ll go back soon!! Love living in Northwest Denver!

What’s the last dessert you ordered at a restaurant? Fried ice cream. And before that it was May 13 when Kevin got dessert pizza at Sazza! Lol. Unless you count fro-yo. That’s starting to be a Tuesday thing. Tomorrow!! Woo!

  1. OMG that is ONE big crepe! haha I love crepes … I use to make them a lot and just ate it with nothing else.

  2. “I basically ordered what I thought would be the smallest — so I could focus on the guacamole.”

    STORY OF MY LIFE!

Okay, I did roll my eyes at Subway for a minute… but when you are eating out for every meal, you gotta go on the cheap sometimes!
I think we ate at Mi Casa too… I can’t remember! I’ve NEVER gotten a crepe from the crepe place, but every single time we go I say I want to- and then forget! I’m sure it was SO good!
The BEST place to get casual food is Cool River Coffee House! http://www.yelp.com/biz/cool-river-coffee-house-breckenridge Go there next time!
We usually bike down to Frisco for lunch and go to Butterhorn Bakery. Their food is amazing! :)

  4. Oooh looks like you guys had such yummy eats! Starbucks is always a favorite for my husband too! :)

I LOVE tried ice cream! We used to get it all the time as a family when Chi Chi’s was still around.

  6. buffalo cheddar? holy yum that looks good. i am glad you had such a great time and got to explore new places.

Good choice on Mi Casa and the Crepe Cart. Next time you are there try Amazing Grace for breakfast or lunch. That was our local hangout. It’s an old house on a side street with a big pot belly stove to sit around. All organic and fresh ingredients.

    I prefer Caribou to Starbucks…
The last dessert I ordered must have been our Anniversary outing around 9-9. It was a huge piece of chocolate cake that we shared and even brought some home to the kids. (Seriously it was that big!)

What a fun “eating” adventure while on vacation..

Looks like some amazing eats! That starbucks is adorable! I’ve never seen a different starbucks like that but think it looks so cute! I would love getting my work done in a starbucks like that ;)

  11. That Starbucks is adorable! My favorite Starbucks is any one that’s convenient when I’m traveling–and usually exhausted and need a jolt of caffeine.

  12. We definitely frequented that Starbucks when we stayed in Breckenridge two years ago. It is a cute one, isn’t it?

I think we also ate at Mi Casa. I can’t exactly remember the name of the Mexican restaurant we ate at . . . . did they have a little salsa bar, where you could pick from a variety of salsa to try? That was my favorite part. I loved it. :)

  13. mom says:

Remember making the cheat recipe for homemade fried ice cream? I haven’t had it in a long time, but it is the one dessert your dad and I have ordered when we have gone out to eat.

  14. Looks like some good food! No shame in going to Starbucks. I rarely miss a chance to hit one up even when on vacation.

  15. I’m with you on the joys of the Target + Starbucks combo… can’t beat it!

  16. Delicious eats! I love “vintage” Starbucks too…it takes away the “chain” aspect of it! Like you I have an auto-response when it comes to ordering desserts at restaurants. When I do have some, it’s usually because I’m sharing with someone else who suggested it. I had lunch with a friend on Sunday and ended the meal with some chocolate fondant and vanilla bean ice cream..it was good, reallly good :) !
