Cakie Friday: Coffee Angel Food Cake + Smiley Library

Angel food cake is the best!! So fluffy. And almost tastes like frosting! It’s Hannah’s favorite cake! The apple does not fall from the tree because my parents served it at their wedding (and we had some too!).

Yum.

But why has it been so long since I’ve made it? It’s so amazing even totally plain, but I always feel like mixing things up. I used this recipe as my inspiration:

  • 1 angel food cake mix – successfully prepared using the high altitude instructions! I always forget those.
  • 1 packet of instant coffee

Done! You’d be surprised how often packets of instant coffee come in handy in baking. I also made the glaze suggested here, but I really wasn’t crazy about it. Too sweet.

I’m hanging out with two twelve-year-old girls today — I invited a play date over for Hannah. I find their perspectives on things both fresh & hilarious! Being 12 was so fun, right? I got to see my first Taylor Swift music video — it was surprisingly cute!

mini me hannah

Look at my little mini me! After 28 years, I finally have a sister I can (sort of) share clothes with. Not sure I could fit a toe into her skinny jeans, but cardigans, hoodies, and shoes are fair game!

And the Boykin thinks he’s found a new ally in Hannah Elizabeth-Rose! Look at him hiding out behind her. I wasn’t even doing anything! Maybe I had the music on too loud for his tastes.

I finally made it to Smiley Library! I’ve been wanting to go there since we moved here, but they’re closed Mondays & Fridays — my two days off! We stocked up on some good books for my sister to read while she’s here.

running with books

Of course, the more books I picked out for her, the more I had to carry home!

kid books

Love that stack. My sister isn’t exactly the bookworm I was at her age, but I’m working on brainwashing her! I actually read The Birthday Ball this morning before we even got out of bed. I was so curious about it since it’s by Lois Lowry, but I didn’t love it. I probably would have when I was 10 though so I wouldn’t give it a bad review. :)

Have you read any of the books in her stack? Or any good children’s lit lately? I actually still want to read Harriet the Spy and The Penderwicks when she’s done with it.

The gold sparkly shoes- I’m not sure if they belong to you or your sister, but I love them (and I have them in silver!).
    The cake sounds delicious!

  2. Cute library and wow – that’s a beautiful, sunny, blue sky!

  3. I love Ella Enchanted! Even as an adult it’s still magical. There’s a series out right now called The Sisters Grimm. Hannah might really enjoy that one!

Okay, don’t get me started on the library but…

One, don’t forget you can order things online and then have them be ready to pick up at your local branch.

Two, thanks to Prop 2A, Smiley will be open additional hours! Mondays and Fridays starting this spring.

Three, if you love the library, you should join the Friends Foundation. They have so many cool events.

That’s all. I love the library.

  5. I used to love going to the library! Haven’t been in so long. Happy reading!

  9. Angel food cake is the best! We always serve it with strawberries and whipped cream. Yum!

I remember Harriot the Spy! I also read a lot of the Babysitter Club and Ramona books back in the day. Oh, and the Christopher Pike mysteries! :)

  10. I recently read Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret and really enjoyed it. I thought Blume did a great job representing a pre-teen girl :) It’s a quick read if you haven’t read it yet! Also, I haven’t read any of those books you chose! I’ve heard of most of them but have yet to read any of them. Maybe one day when I have a daughter – I actually think I own Ella Enchanted! :)
