Okay, maybe not the whole day. I’m just walking about my wods — what’s new?
Believe it or not — that pic was taken after the good wod. Haha. (Bump is from doing deadlifts in shorts — why don’t they text me on deadlift days so I can wear pants?!??!?! And those are burpee knees from this morning.. it comes off)
So here’s what happened…
Every day when we go into the gym, our coaches tell us what we should really focus on mobilizing with the foam rollers and lacrosse balls in preparation for the strength/wod. In the car on the way there, I said to Kevin,”I better not hear them say love your legs!” I was a little sore after impulsively running 8 miles that morning (8:11 pace too — not my usual jog/texting).
And what came up in the workout? Deadlifts. Oh boy. After we warmed up, we worked on building up to our 2 rep max weight on the deadlifts. I was all like WE JUST DID THIS!!! Because we did. We did it in the last week of June, and I hit 215lbs!! But I was feeling peppy, so I thought I was still going to do well. Wrong. I didn’t make it over 205, and that felt terrible!!! The time I hit 215, it was feeling “light” — I was just struggling with my grip. Not today. Every weight I put on that dumb bar felt heavy. I hope it was my legs. Either that or I’m totally losing my edge.
Kevin had to rub it in, and was totally killing it. I can’t remember his weight, but he’s pushing 300lbs any day now. I forgot to tell my coach my excuse about running, but he was still nice and said,”We all have good days and bad days.” The funny part is if I didn’t have the endorphins for the run, I probably would’ve been whining a lot more. Have you noticed that I obsess over things? Haha. He also pointed out that it was only 10lbs. True. That’s like one lousy dumbbell.
Things didn’t get better in the wod:
Deadlift @ 135
HSPUTime — 7:28I like handstand push-ups. I just can’t quite do them yet. Which means I have to do them on a box (like this), and I just really stink at that. Regular push-ups are a weakness… and these are push-ups with the possibility of falling on your head. My only consolation is that I still managed to beat Kevin in the workout. It doesn’t really make me feel that much better because he was doing the men’s prescribed weight of 225. I couldn’t even pick that thing up.My one shining moment of the bad day —- CARTWHEELS! We sometimes do them in the warm-ups (for handstand push-ups), and I can crank those out. Even on my “bad side.” Everyone is always super impressed. Haha. The coach even asked if I was a cheerleader. Haha. Nope. And then I went home. We ate some grilled chicken & sweet potato fries.Okay, and some candy — we only have like a week left before our nutrition challenge. We have to take advantage.
Conjoined twin gummy bears!!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously deliberated about whether or not I should eat them. I did. You should also probably know that I recently had double layer fortune cookie! So there were like two cookies baked on top of each other…. I AM SO LUCKY!!!Yes, I know. My hands look ugly too. But the good news is that it hurts a lot less when I hang from the bar these days. I’ll take it. And you’ll be happy to know that it doesn’t affect my piano playing (other than grossing out my students). Now let’s talk about THE GOOD DAY!! I went straight to bed after dinner last night so I could go back to the gym at 5AM to hopefully redeem myself! I saw something fun on the board — Curtis P’s!!! Being the huge internet nerd that I am, I’ve seen videos and workouts of people doing them. But I’ve never attempted them because, hey, I didn’t know how to load a barbell! Let alone figure out how to do a squat clean! As much as I was a little bit skeptical about joining CrossFit, it’s been 100% worth it for the great coaching. Plus it gives me the confidence to try things I never would have on my own. As if I have a choice when I’m in class….Here’s an example of a Curtis P:
Curtis P’s are super fun because they combine three movements: squat clean, lunge, and push press. So it’s not like you’re repeating the same thing a million times. Plus, I’d say weighted lunges are a strength of mine. BRING IT!!!My other strength? Burpees, of course.Today’s WOD:5 rounds for time:5 Curtis P’s @ 75 lbs10 burpeesTime — 12:45
That was fun!!!!I felt good about the weight too. 65lbs was prescribed for women, but I thought I’d push it a little bit. Yeah, it was harder than I thought, but I was still one of the first to finish so I think I made the right choice. That workout was a sweat-in-your-eyes mess! I actually had to put the bar down at one point because my eyes were stinging so badly. Something about the barbell/burpee combo.
Want to see a funny/embarrassing pic????????Sure you do. Here’s a pic our box posted on the wod blog:
Can you spot me??? Yeah, bright green shorts & pink shoes. The only person in the entire class not doinganything during the middle of Fight Gone Bad. It looks like I’m just taking my sweet time. I’m guessing I was transitioning between the box jumps and push presses, and my strategy was to go harder on the box jumps because I can do more.Well, I actually have to teach this afternoon so I’ll have to think about something other than CrossFit for a few hours. Haha. I asked Kevin if I should quit after last night’s bad workout and he said,”No, you’d just find something else to obsess over!! But it would give me like a week’s reprieve.”
I don’t know what he’s talking about…. he came home from work with a story about challenging his co-workers to do double unders in a conference room……
Tonight’s Date Night <3 <3 <3
Can you do a cartwheel? Yes. Weird that I can, but I’ve always been able to.
What do you do after a bad workout? Try again ASAP… try to be reasonable with myself. Cuddle the puppies.
Who’s your fitness inspiration? At our box, I’m always trying to keep up with Kevin. There aren’t a lot of competitive girls in the 5AM & 7PM classes, but when one shows up — it’s fun to push each other a little bit! In the blog world, I’ve been really inspired by Tina and Courtney who are CrossFit machines but down to earth about it!P.S. How to Have an Awesome Deadlift Workout+ Ode to Deadlifts – Maybe those will help me next time. I always go home and read/watch YouTube videos about things I’m struggling with!!
