#392 Was The Charm

I got my strict pull-up today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Proof: Yeah… I was really surprised. And Pippa was proud!!!

In case you didn’t like that one, here is my second, a bit stricter.

No way!! I can’t believe it!! I never expected this to happen today! It’s only been 36 days since I declared my goal to do a strict pull-up. I had 391 recorded pull-ups that I practiced on my pull-ups page. I seriously didn’t think I was even close!!! My super optimistic goal was to get a strict pull-up by my birthday (September 10) — my back-up goal was to get one by the end 2013. Crushed it!!!!!! :)

Here’s how it happened. This week, I pr’ed twice on my assisted pull-ups….. all the way up to an incredible 5 & 6!!! Haha. But I was like… I wonder if I could do one with a lighter band. So I ordered this one that says it assists 2-15lbs. Whatever that means. It came today (thank you, Amazon Prime) so I had to give it a try before we went to CrossFit. So I did. And I could do one with it… it just didn’t feel like it was helping me at all!!  So I was like… let me try one without it. I figured there was NO WAY I could do it, but I made Kevin come outside just in case. In fact I told him that I was going to make him videotape every time I tried a pull-up from then on just in case….. and boom!!! I GOT IT!!!!!! After that, I did one more, and several tonight at our box — it was part of the warm-up. Holla!!!!

By the way, when I started CrossFit at the end of March, I could BARELY hang from the bar. I found it really painful. Working diligently on pull-ups at home has really improved my grip (okay, and my callouses) so the burning has mostly gone away. I’m sure it’ll be back sometime since I still really struggle with knees to elbows & toes to bars.

Tonight’s WOD was a 20-minute AMRAP of the following:

  • 400m run
  • 10 pull-ups
  • 20 push-ups
  • 10 box jumps

I was feeling great after getting those first two pull-ups and finished up 5 full rounds + 1 run!!!!!! The pull-ups I did jumping from only 3 plates.

A little cherry dipped cone from DQ to CELEBRATE!!!!!

Up next —– Kipping pull-ups. (Related article: Which came first? The strict or the kip?) 5 strict pull-ups. Handstand push-ups. More unbroken double unders! I will knock them off one at a time. As Shalane would say: cold execution!

My advice to those of you still practicing??? Get some resistance bands. Practice every day. I would make up mini bodyweight wods, go for as many unbroken as possible, or set a goal for the day. Anything to keep myself practicing. And I plan to continue to practice them daily now that I have them. Hooray!!!!

Thanks for letting me celebrate — Kevin said I looked almost as happy as I did walking down the aisle on our wedding day. Haha.

What goal have you accomplished lately/are you still working on? Go get it!!!

Cookie Friday: Lemon Crinkle Cookies

Yay Spring! Sunny & 75! And doesn’t lemon just seem like a lovely, springy flavor? Yeah, I said lovely.

½ cups Butter, Softened
1 cup Granulated Sugar
½ teaspoons Vanilla Extract
1 whole Egg
1 teaspoon Lemon Zest
1 Tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice
¼ teaspoons Salt
¼ teaspoons Baking Powder
⅛ teaspoons Baking Soda
1-½ cup All-purpose Flour
½ cups Powdered Sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease light-colored baking sheets with non stick cooking spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Whip in vanilla, egg, lemon zest and juice. Scrape sides and mix again. Stir in all dry ingredients slowly until just combined, excluding the powdered sugar. Scrape sides of bowl and mix again briefly. Pour powdered sugar onto a large plate. Roll a heaping teaspoon of dough into a ball and roll in powdered sugar. Place on baking sheet and repeat with remaining dough.

Bake for 9-11 minutes or until bottoms begin to barely brown and cookies look matte {not melty or shiny}. Remove from oven and cool cookies about 3 minutes before transferring to cooling rack.

Recipe via Lauren’s Lastest.

My notes: Roll on that powdered sugar!! Mine were definitely lacking in the crinkle department since I accidentally skimped. And bake them a tad longer than you might think. It’s a lot harder to tell when they’re done with such a light-colored cookie. Mine probably needed another 90 seconds or so. But they’re awesomely chewy!

Boyd wants cookies to be done!!!!

Boyd will even pretend to love me for cookies. I’m not falling for it!

Want to know something cool?

Kevin’s family and my family both had traditions growing up regarding celebrating spring!!!!

And the both included one very important factor:

Dairy Queen!!! The one in the picture above is actually in Winona where Kevin grew up, but I’m thinking it’s probably not the one he grew up with. It’s a little too “modern.” He is almost 31, you know!

My family would get to go when we spotted the first robin of the season. His would go when it hit 70 degrees. We were vigorously debating last night when we should go this year. Chances are (with my vision) I’ll never see a robin all summer! Haha.

I took Boyd out for a little promenade in the park after I got off work this afternoon. And look what we found?! His dunce’s cap. Hehe. I really wanted to put it on his head, but I was afraid some of the workers might object. Haha.

Hey, check out my new DIY WOD tab on top! I know you’re going to want to see my sweaty photo collage! I’m going to do a little log of our CrossFit/kettlebell/TRX style workouts. We’ll typically be doing them on MWF. I’ve also listed some sites I’ve found helpful, and plan to continue adding to that.

Did your family have any spring traditions? Cleaning doesn’t count!

What would you order at DQ? Cherry-dipped cone!!
