I experimented with a hummus pizza for dinner tonight!

Boyd was a very bad boy today. This is how I found him when I got back from running with Pippa. I think he was punishing me for leaving the bedroom closed so he couldn’t jump in bed!! Usually he doesn’t move a muscle when I’m running with Pippa.

His consequence was that he had to run a mile with me outside in the cold.

boyd gentle leader boykinI know he could sense my annoyance with him because he was even more stubborn than normal about wearing the gentle leader. I pretty much had to drag him the entire mile! I didn’t want to walk because the wind was blowing snow around like crazy!! Brrrrr!!!

Workouts lately…

So I’ve been doing a lot of the 2010 Spartacus workout lately  – have you ever tried it? It’s actually surprisingly brutal.

kettlebells dumbbellsI’ve done it probably 4x now, but I keep forgetting to bring a notebook or something to track my reps! I’ve been doing mostly this version using kettlebells, but I can’t quite manage renegade rows with kettlebells.

And guess what! All of a sudden I can do push-ups!!!! I’ve never been able to do a push-up on my toes — in my life?! I know, that’s kind of embarrassing, but I really started working out as a cardio queen so I guess it’s not that shocking. I’ve been practicing them every day since I discovered I could do one. I can string together about 3 before they start to get snake-y!! But I’m so happy!!!!! I think lifting (more or less) heavy kettlebells is what got me there. Yay!!!

mileage wednesday runningI managed to cobble together some serious mileage today!! 3.1 with the dogs, and then I ran 2 5ks in a row at the gym. The first I tried to keep a decent pace, and the second I jogged for 3 minutes followed by a 45 second sprint. I need to sign up for a race so I can get a little more committed with my running — I’ve been seriously slacking since the half marathon. How to juggle running, yoga, and strength training??

What strength training (or other) move do you struggle with? Happy with my breakthrough with push-ups. Still working on double unders, and don’t even get me started on pull-ups!

Have you ever tried hummus or another sauce on pizza? This vegan version looks amazing. I also want to try a cold hummus pizza.

Hot Sauceless + Earning My Keep

This morning was rough. We were out of hot sauce! What are my typical fried eggs without hot sauce?

In light of this misfortune, I decided to mix things up a little bit.

I microwaved a small sweet potato and mixed it with fried egg, green onions, various peppers. I also fried up some turkey bacon which I was going to use, but then it just didn’t sound good so I put it in the fridge for a sandwich/salad later.

Boyd telling us — “YOU NEED TO GET A COUCH!!!” Lol. We a futon, but it’s currently in one of the empty bedrooms. Where it will probably stay. Nobody ever needs to see that. Haha.

Boyd and I got woken up by a kitty-cat yammering in our yard at about 5:30 this morning. For some reason, I couldn’t fall asleep so I got an early start to the gym.

FYI: kettlebell thrusters, kettlebell overhead lunges.

I am so proud that I used a 20lb kettlebell for the entire workout!!  It was tough because there was a lot of holding it above my head in the locked position. You’d think this workout would get easier as you went down the ladder, but even the 3-2-1 are hard because you get very aerobic switching between the exercises. I love mixing cardio with weights!! No wasting time in the gym!!! I finished in 29:35. I set the kettlebell down every single time until 3 reps between lunges and thrusters. 20lbs is heavy!!

Okay, so then I wanted to see some Olympics so this happened:

I climbed the Empire State Building while watching men’s volleyball. Haha. Stairs always make me the MOST sweaty!!

When I got home from the gym, I realized I needed to do some chores. Gotta earn my running shoes! ;) I mowed the lawn. It took me less than 20 minutes. The backyard was really fast, but the front was pretty long so it took a little muscle.

That is dead! Plus it was ugly before it was dead. That thing needs to go!! It’s lucky I don’t know where Kevin keeps his saws.

I guess we almost inherited this gem. I think we’re about thirty years too young for it. I should take it and stick it in someone’s yard as a prank. Haha.

Does Boyd enjoy the outdoor playtime while I mow? No way. He sits by the side door and waits to get back in the a/c. What a little pansy!!!!

I forced myself to eat a big bowl of broccoli slaw for lunch. I figured it was only fair since I sent a bunch with Kevin for his work lunch.

I tried out some of my new Strawberry Basil vinegar. It was pretty good. I also had a leftover burger from Grilling Monday, but it’s too ugly to show.

I’m going to do some baking this afternoon!! I have a few adventurous ideas up my sleeve so we’ll see what happens.

Do you have any little ornaments or things in your yard? We have a little like stone bird thing that I actually like that was given to me as a going-away gift from my co-workers. There’s also some bird house up in our front porch?? I have to get like a baseball to throw at that to knock it down. I don’t think birds live there!! I didn’t mean that to sound violent. It’s just decorative.

Do you do yard work/garden? Not really. I’m a little nervous about Kevin J inspecting my mowing. I have a hard time seeing where I’ve mowed. Lol.

I saw this ecard on Whine Less, Breathe More, and it made me think of my DIY WODs.

Loved this one I did from GPP over the weekend:

My game was a little off that day, but I challenged myself to finish under 30 minutes. 29:35 did the trick. I used a 35lb kettlebell rather than the prescribed 45lbs. I gave the heavier weight a chance, but I knew I would end up cracking myself in the chest if I used that one!!!

By the way, I’m gunning for the next taller box… I CAN DO IT!! I know I can. I just have to practice sometime when there’s not a lot of people around. Haha. And maybe when Kevin is there to hold my hand. He can do it! I’ve seen him do it although he does have 6 inches on me!

Here’s a workout that’s PERFECT for Olympic watching:

I chose steps, arc trainer, and treadmill because that’s what my gym has. I’d love to throw in a little rowing machine! I could go on the treadmill all day, but it’s fun to mix it up and probably good for you too.

Moving along, I have a new yoga goal! I’m excited. I think one of the reasons I have a tough time sticking with yoga is because I don’t have measurable goals. Have you noticed that I like timing things??  Lol. I know yoga is so good for me, and I feel wonderful when I do it. But I have a hard time giving up running/weights time for it.

Firefly pose! Doesn’t that look so fun? I can promise there will be pictures when I master it. I’m guessing it may be MONTHS since I can’t get my palms flat on the floor behind my feet. That’s just a sign that I need it, right? Also my new gym has some yoga classes. I’ll brave it one day!!

I did go to the gym as well this morning. I wasn’t planning to. I was sore. Good sense told me not to, but I’ve been trying to feel out my readiness for some upcoming fall races.

I got the worst side stitch I have ever had. That’s what I get for avoiding my rational thoughts not to go this morning. I ran 4 miles, but it was not enjoyable. And that’s when I realized, I’ve had my shoes since February. The first time I wore them was for a 10-mile race. I make a lot of good decisions about shoes, right? So I’ll be doing some internet shopping. I’ve been extra awful because in the past few months I’ve done tons of other workouts in those shoes too. Shame, shame. I know I need two good pairs of shoes — one for running and one more minimalist style for kettlebells, GPP workouts, etc. Any faves? I’m addicted to pink Nike, but I will briefly consider and discard other suggestions.

I’m trying to find the right balance (+ yoga!!). I know I shouldn’t complain because I have more free time than anyone except for Boyd, but I can’t help wanting to do it all. Lol.

The Skinniest Pasta

Zucchini actually really does work as pasta.

Even my poorly-cut zucchini. I need a good slicer tool. But the skeptical Kevin James even endorsed this as one of the best “healthy meals” I’ve made. I’m fairly certain that’s only because it contains meat, but I’ll take what I can get.

I made this lovely dish on 4th of July eve, but didn’t feel the need to blog. After all, we were watching the conclusion of North & South. I love Mr.Thornton. Now I can stop saying to Kevin like,”Mr.Thornton would never do that… ” Etc. I bet Mr. Thornton would like this “pasta” though.

The Skinniest Pasta (via the fit cook)

You’ll Need:
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 pound ground turkey breast
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 14oz can low sodium tomato sauce
2 large zucchini
grated parmesan cheese to serve

Here’s How:
1. Preheat the olive oil in a large pot over medium high heat. Add the ground turkey and garlic, using a wooden spoon to break apart the meat. Add the bay leaf,  red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper. 
2. Add the tomato sauce, plus 3/4 cups of water to the pot, and bring to a simmer. Season with a little more salt and pepper.
3. Remove the ends from the zucchini, and cut each into 1/4-inch thin slices, lengthwise. (This is way easier if you have a mandolin, but not necessary.) Lay the slices flat on the cutting board, and use a sharp knife to slice into thin strips. They should look like fettuccine. 
4. Add the zucchini to the sauce and toss for 3-5 minutes, or until the zucchini is slightly cooked, but still “al dente.” Serve with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese.

Feel free to add lots of extra crushed red pepper. Yum!!!

Pretty self explantory. Pretty sweaty.

I clocked in at 17:37. I was trying to beat Tina’s time of 18 minutes. Lol. But she did it with a heavier kettlebeell and wall balls so it’s not really comparable. So I knew I had to break 18!!! Haha.

It was tricky balancing the kettlebell for that picture. I need some heavier ones. I’m also wanting to get a Lebert equalizer so I can practice my pullups. Kevin wants to DIY one instead of forking over $100. Excited to work on building my home gym!!!!

Speaking of gyms, I wish they’d build one of these “adult parks” in Denver.

2 days till Camp Kreisel — my family is roadtripping down here, leaving Saturday morning!! I gave them this idea to bake cookies in the car on the way here.

Have you ever tried any alternative pastas? I want to try spaghetti squash too. Although we don’t like squash. Yucky!!!

Ya Me Voy

You’d think by now I’d be a total pro at packing by now.

I just tried to count it out on my fingers (and ran out), but I think I’ve made about 17 trips back and forth to the Dominican Republic during the past 4 years! This is my smallest haul ever. I’m bringing one suitcase and one tote! They started charging last year for suitcases to the DR :( so two would be $60!

I’m exporting quite a few things for my friends that are hard to find and/or very expensive in the DR so I packed those things first. I piled some normal clothes and some workout clothes on top. Added a few books and called it a day. Kevin has asked me at least 4 times if I remembered to pack my toothbrush. I’ve forgotten on virtually every trip we’ve taken together. We’re forever running to a 24-hour grocery for a new toothbrush!

I had a really hard time deciding how many books to bring. I believe I’ve settled on 6. But there are two more on the ledge by my door. We’ll see what happens!

Yesterday was super hectic. So I decided to postpone our WOD. Normally I’m a total stickler, but we needed some time to talk some things out (in a good way!) before I left town for the week. So I decided that was more important.

Tonight’s WOD:

10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 reps

  • Kettlebell Thrusters – Right Arm
  • 2x Lunges with Kettlebell locked out overhead – Right arm
  • Box jumps
  • Kettlebell Thrusters- Left Arm
  • 2x Lunges with Kettlebell locked out overhead – Left Arm
  • Box Jumps

Kevin was not a fan of this workout. Even I found the lunges to beexcruciating. I kept my weight at 15lbs following the first round to make sure my form was decent on those locked overhead lunges.

My time was 29:52! Clocking in just under 30 minutes. The first 4 rounds were brutal, but once we got down to 5 reps we could really bust a move. I did this WOD without warming up. Worst idea ever. My knees felt so tight! I normally run a few miles before I strength train, but I was just trying to get my workout done quickly!

After working out at our normal gym, we picked up some last-minute things for my trip, made dinner, and worked on packing. Around 9:30PM — and I know this sounds crazy but I actually like running later — I went to our apartment gym to bank a few miles! I won’t be able to run tomorrow since I’ll be stuck in the airport tomorrow so I’m logging these miles for tomorrow. I figure it counts because I’ll be changing two time zones so I’ll just say I’m logging it on Dominican time. (I still haven’t missed running a 5k or more every day since August 21. I was going to quit when I hit Day 100 but it came and went without me noticing. At this point I might as well stick it out a full year). Our apartment gym was super hot, but I banged out 4 miles and headed out. Can’t wait to run in the DR… hope I can still take the heat!

I whipped up some dough for Kevin’s Cookie Friday this week. He’s convinced me that he’s capable of baking them off himself. Should be pretty foolproof, but if not he can just eat the dough.

The empty pb jar was my parting gift to Boyd Boykins. You know I’m starting to have separation anxiety about leaving the boys!!

After workout #2 I had dinner #2 in bed. Oh how I love to eat late at night. Especially something so wonderfully carby! Yum! Kevin got one of the one Boring 3 because I had zero time for the kitchen tonight.

I’m going to bed. My flight is super stinking early… only for me to sit in Miami for the majority of the day. Oh well. I have my books, and I finally learned the pin for my debit card!

Are you a good packer? No. I’m envious of people with nicely folded stacks and meticulous lists.

Cookies or cookie dough? Dough. Until I start to think about the raw eggs and get grossed out.

How do you entertain yourself in airports? Books. If I have a good one, the time just flies! Sometimes I am organized enough to put something on my iPhone or iPod, but not often.

P.S. I’ll be in the DR till next Tuesday. I plan to blog it up if/when I have internet access. But no promises. I’m a pretty hot commodity. ;)

Polka Dots & Whatnots

I got a new polka dot dress!! It’s to replace my “lucky” polka dot dress from college that I totally wore out. If you knew me any time between 2006-2010, you probably know what dress I’m talking about.

Can you spot me??? Haha. The student teachers of 2008 at Emmaus Bible College. I was in Music Education so I didn’t have the t-shirt. But I think I wore that dress for about every important presentation I had! And a lot during student teaching and at my first teaching job. Surprisingly, this was the only picture I could find of the old dress that didn’t incriminate anyone. haha.

This morning it was breakfast at my desk! Kevin had an 8AM meeting (lame) so we had to get to the office early. He bribed me with Starbucks. It worked. It was the only thing that got me out of the house on time. I enjoyed it with a double packet of strawberry Better Oats. We’re not even going to talk about the amount of sugar in those little packets.

Hey guess what? Kevin is coming over to the good health/fitness side. Three things to prove this:

  • I caught him watching marathon highlights on YouTube last night!!!
  • He seemed concerned that a girl ordered hot chocolate with whipped cream as her “regular” at Starbucks – presumably every morning!
  • He sent me an article today at work about possible new standards for obesity!
  • I don’t even think he complained once, even though I rubbed it in that it was WOD Day!!!!

I, on the other hand, enjoyed a sugary afternoon snack.

Only 100 calories!!  But I think I met my sugar quota today by about 3PM.

To the gym I go!! Today’s warm-up was 1.43 miles of stairs followed by a 5k on the treadmill. I ran intervals on both — and finished with a solid 8 minute pace.

Today’s WOD:

AMRAP in 18 minutes

I used 30lbs for the suitcase burpees and 20-25 on the others. The kettlebell thrusters almost killed me on 25. I finished 4 rounds + a few thrusters. Kevin totally kicked my butt and made it through 4 rounds + both sets of thrusters in round 5!

And then for fun I tried to do AMRAP in 1 minute with my love — box jumps! On my first try, I totally failed once and hit 19.

You can see what happened on my second try. Watch especially lovely #16!

That’s for all of you who said you were afraid to do box jumps. That nice fail shows that you won’t die. I always do a couple of lame wimp-outs when I first start and also when I start to really fatigue. Take it from a prissy girl — it won’t kill you!

Now I’m gunning for 30 in a minute because Kevin said he thinks I could do it. Does he realize how much extra gym time that’s going to cost him since I’ll want to practice every day? After all, I did it after one failed attempt + 18 minutes of kettlebells + almost 5 miles of cardio. So I was a little winded.

Finally dinner time!! We did a lot of quick chores around the house so dinner got even later than usual. I was inspired by this Sweet Potato Coconut Cashew Rice Bowl, but ended up making quite a few tweaks. Most notably swapping cashews for almonds and adding a bunch of spinach. It was a lot like the Spice Market Sweet Potato & Lentil Packets, except obviously with rice. And the coconut milk made it nice and creamy. Mm mm!!

Do you like Jelly Bellies? Favorite Flavor? Yes. I love the marshmallow and pear ones. And a lot of the super specialty ones.

And even more telling… Do you like the black ones? Yes. I’m one of those people!!!

ONE WEEK TILL DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. What do you think Kevin and Boyd will do without me? I’ve heard rumors of movies involving apes and transformers that would never be viewed in my presence. And yes, I definitely plan to make ahead some cookie dough for the Cookie Friday when I’m gone. ;)
